TWO BUNDLES

The next day I drive down Davie and cross Granville Street to turn into the lane where I park my car. It’s a warm and sunny day, and if everything goes right, this day will be the beginning of my new life as a bundle dealer. I feel the roll of money tucked inside my boot, and unlike most days when I begin my shift in the Blackstone, I take the alley and go directly to the Austin, eager to see if Max will come through.

Inside, the place is quiet, except for a few pool players. I’m surprised to see Charlie sitting alone at a table. Like most hypes, he almost never hangs out in the Austin where the beer costs more than the Blackstone. I walk up to him.

“Hey, what’s going on?”

“You looking?”

“No, I’ve already got something going.”

“He’ll be in later.”

I sit down beside him and order a couple of beers. Charlie knows that I am waiting for Max, so I assume that Max has gone to him to see if I am good to deal with. My time spent with him finally paid off. After a while, Jodie also comes in and sits with us.

The heroin I had bought from her was clean China white, almost ten per cent pure, and it differed a lot from the regular brown “number three” heroin or “apple juice” you normally find on the Strip. When she sold it to me, Jodie was very careful to warn me not to do too much. If an addict regularly does two caps at two per cent, he could easily die if the two caps contain ten per cent heroin, which would be like doing ten caps. The price is the same, thirty-five dollars a cap and nothing tells you to hold back and not do it all at once unless the dealer warns you. The cover team is aware of this new supply and we heard that some users overdosed on it. We expected the purity to come down once the dealers realized that they could easily quadruple their profit, but this isn’t happening.

Jodie also asks about Max and I figure that both she and Charlie get their good product from him.

The waiter comes to the table.

“If you guys don’t drink, you have to get out of here,” he says looking us down. Jodie smiles at him and orders some beer.

“You guys do your shit outside,” he says, before leaving to get the beer.

Hypes bring heat with them wherever they go. I need to distance myself so I leave the table without a word and walk to a spot near the strippers’ empty stage. After a while, Max suddenly appears. He didn’t come from outside, so I assume that he came from somewhere in the hotel. He looks at me and walks out. About twenty minutes later, he comes back, looks around, and disappears again. The agreed time has passed, but Max seems to be working to make this deal happen. I pull the money out of my boot and put it in my pocket.
